The Big Lebowski
The Big Lebowski is a comedic movie about a guy who suddenly
gets drawn into an abduction case. The movie’s protagonist is the “Dude”. The “Dude”
is a guy who does nothing but bowl, drink, and smoke with middle aged friends. During
the beginning of the movie some criminals break into his house looking for a
rich man. This causes the dude going to the rich man’s house looking for him to
pay for all of the damages afflicted to the house. He ends up leaving the house
with nothing. Part of what makes this scene funny is the incongruity of his
whole situation. You would never expect someone who looks like a hobo to come
waltzing into a rich man’s house. However, that is only the beginning of the
Dude’s story. Following the encounter, the rich man’s daughter gets abducted
and the rich man asks the Dude to give 1 million dollars to the criminals in
exchange for his daughter. The Dude then attempts to go and get the daughter
trying to take the million dollars for himself. The reason this example
supports the incongruity theory is because the dud does not look like the type
of person that would end up giving ransom to criminals. In fact, he just looks
like an average, fat, poor, white dude, who looks like he is homeless. Besides
the pursuit of the criminals the “Dude” is also infatuated with bowling. The
dude is trying to compete with another guy who is named Jesus. The fact that
this example even exists in the movie proves how this movie is incongruent with
reality and shows how being lame can be funny at the same time. Overall, I
enjoyed the movie and loved to watch how the Dude acted in front of the rich
man. I highly recommend this movie to someone who would like to have fun and
laugh with their friends for a while.
