The Office
I can’t relate much to the office since I have not watched
much of it. However, I can understand that it must be funny because the
incongruity theory and the superiority theory plays such a big role in it. The
way Michael, Dwight, and Jim use the superiority theory seems to have a big
impact on the other people who are within the office. I remember when I first
watched a clip of the office I was in a security meeting for my whole high
school about gun violence. During the introduction to the meeting a clip of the
Office was played, and I guess you could say I was instantly hooked. The way
that the characters handled themselves was in a serious way, but I guess you
could say that it was so serious that I found it funny. The way the main
characters abused their power put the other characters at risk which
intentionally made the whole scene more dramatic and comedic. I enjoyed the way
that the main characters fought off whatever opposition they faced using the
superiority theory in almost an unheard-of way. For example, in the scene that
we watched we saw an assailant attacking the building that the office is in. During
that time when they knew the assailant was coming they acted using the superiority
theory to show that they felt better and more prepared to defeat the assailant.
Using the incongruity theory, they attacked through the ceiling and blockading
the door and many other ways that were just so odd that it made the clip funnier.
Overall, I enjoy the office, even though I have seen so little of it, and I
understand how Chris related the incongruity theory and the superiority theory
to this show.
Why do you think that your introduction to the show in that fashion helped to cement your affection? Also you are in a unique position as someone who hasn't seen much to tell us how you relate to office mania. How do you feel about it?
